Dr. Berg explains the reason behind the sticky tarry black stool on ketogenic diet. It is basically an unabsorbed fat. Ketosis is a transition from sugar burning to fat burning and then when you consume a lot of fat, it is going to take some time to make the transition or adaptation. In the transition phase, you may end up with the fatty stool (stool might float or greasy) a condition called steatorrhea, overloading the colon with more fat that it could actually handle. Another situation this may occur is when you do OMAD or one meal a day. The best thing to do is to give your body more time to adapt and possible cut down some of the fats.

Other Related Condition Causing this:
• Blood – Ulcer
• Pancreatic disease
• Exocrine Gland Insufficiency
• Iron pills
• Medications

  1. I've been following KETO almost 2 yrs now, but I only get that type of stools when I've been eating mammal meat 3 days in a row. And b/c of my blood condition, I must take the iron pills or eat liver every day, which the pills also cause that type. I'm about ready to go towards more vegan w/ cooked red mammal meat only 1 a week

  2. just eat small meals and a wide variety of healthy foods that agree with you. i only fast if something has disturbed my gut flora, it does seem to help. but a fast everyday is to much. Sorry "DR" Berg I don't want to lose my healthy weight, its there for a reason. Again, PROVE yourself. exactly what kind of DR. are you? where did you go to medical school? You look young are you still in practice????

  3. It’s because you’re not eating enough fiber from fruits and vegetables!! Plant based eaters use the bathroom 2-3 times a day!!!! The fat you eat is the fat you wear…Dr. John McDougall. Look him up and follow him and all his physician friends for perfect health. Plants FEED the good bacteria. Plants will make you lean. Apple cider vinegar will ruin your teeth over time. It will etch your enamel. I’m a RDH. 🥬🍇🥝🌽

  4. I went nuts with fats when I first started keto 12mths ago. I dont have a gallbladder, so fat I and are constantly at war.
Once I added MCT to my diet and eliminated olive oil, avocado oil, butter and lard I started to thrive. I get my fat from my food.
I eat oily fish avocado and I make icecream with coconut cream. I use mct as the basis for salad dressing. I dont need a gallbladder to process these fats. I snack on mineral salts all day and splash acv into most of my water during the day.
What Ive found during this past year is that keto is highly individual. Just because this works for me, doesnt mean it will work for anyone else. Also you need to research, learn and experiment on yourself. Oh and be careful out there. The carbies are eager to sabotage you.

  5. I have got chronic constipation with steatorrhea (my poop is either made of small pieces which float or a big fatty one). I am guessing my problem could be SIBO since my digestions are a bit heavy and I have a lot of bloating and gas. It's not painful, but it is annoying.

    I also have a hiatal hernia…

    What should I do?

  6. I had this. My solution, when other attempts made no difference, was to mix Sauerkraut in with my salad. (I imagine that eating kimchi would help, too, but Sauerkraut is more easily available for me.) I no longer need the Sauerkraut for this initial purpose, as it must have helped my gut bacteria to readjust, but I still eat it on the days when I’m not combining my salad with broccoli, spinach, etc. I just mix chopped up fried eggs and fried salmon into the salad with Sauerkraut (and avocado, etc), as the salmon and eggs help hide the bitterness of the Sauerkraut! My stools are now smaller and less frequent than previously, but it’s not constipation. There’s simply nothing there most of the time, as my body clings onto and uses all the healthy nutrients it’s been denied for so long. I’m not worried: after eight weeks I’m now on belt hole number five (instead of number one – the ‘largest’ setting), my watch strap has also moved along one hole, my round the tummy button measurement is lower, I’m feeling so much better, walking so much easier and sleeping so much sounder. Oh, and the skin around my fingernails is now perfect and unbroken for the first time in my life! No idea about weight, as I don’t have a set of scales, and I’m quite happy not to be in a position whereby I’d end up obsessively weighing myself. Anyway: the sticky tarry black stool was a barrier worth fighting through, and I’m happy I found Sauerkraut when nothing else was working. (Oh, I should explain that after the first four days of 16:8 I moved accidentally into OMAD, and I’ve stayed with that, as it fits my lifestyle better; I was getting so tired of making two packed meals a day for 16:8, and now I don’t make any. Life is good!)
